Event 2020: Rethinking the Future
The digital event of 31/10/2020 was our first experience in organising a TEDx event. And although 2020 was more turbulent than we initially expected, we found a way to embellish it with fond memories and new lessons – not only for our team members, but also for our guests and speakers. For this, we want to thank everyone who supported our work in 2020!
What does that mean? The TEDxTUDarmstadt team will continue its work in 2021! Who can say how the new year 2021 will turn out? However, we are quite sure of one thing: the new TEDx event will take place. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and the preparation is already starting. Would you like to take a look behind the scenes and get involved in the upcoming event? Then contact us now!

Rethinking the Future - Speakers

Alfred Nordmann‘s interests concern the relations of science and technology. He has been teaching Philosophy of Science and of Technoscience at the Technical University of Darmstadt since 2002. Together with Davis Baird, he initiated the first working group funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation on philosophical and social dimensions of nanotechnology. For many years he was involved with the IANUS working group which promotes science and engineering for peace and conflict resolution. In this way he explores how public values influence scientific and technological research. The major topic of his TEDx Talk is “Tinkering for Peace – How Hackers and Makers can Promote Co-operative Ways of Living Together.”

As a manager and problem-solver in the field of management and technology transfer, he has a wide range of experience in the areas of patent strategy, invention assessment, technology commercialization & licensing, negotiations and innovation management.

Emily Penn is a Skipper, Ocean Advocate, and the Director at eXXpedition who manages the company’s engagement in an initiative that links women’s health and economic well-being with a hunger for novel solutions to advanced environmental problems. With a background in architecture, Emily Penn has always been passionate about finding solutions for environmental problems, especially plastic pollution. Thus, she started collecting data on global issues, discovering previously unknown oceanic gyres – huge areas where plastic pollution accumulated – and co-founded Pangaea Explorations to provide scientists, filmmakers, and everyday people access to the most remote parts of our planet. This year, she also launched the SHiFT platform, which helps people navigate hundreds of impactful solutions to ocean plastic pollution, finding the ones that are best for them.
She is an international public speaker and provides insights and clarifications about global companies, sharing both her adventures and an understanding of the issues relating to our oceans, human mindset, and future society.
