Professor at TU Darmstadt

Topic

Tinkering for Peace

Prof. Dr. Alfred Nordmann talks about his research on peace and conflict resolution. He speaks about the question of why the probability of success might be greater if we try to "Tinker for Peace" than to try to "build or make" peace. He also explains, how hackers and makers can promote co-operative ways of living together. Prof. Dr. Alfred Nordmann is a lecturer in philosophy and history of science and technology at the Darmstadt University of Technology. His interest in the history of science lies particularly in the emergence of new disciplines. Together with Davis Baird, he initiated the first working group on philosophical and social aspects of nanotechnology, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. For many years he participated in the IANUS working group, which promotes both science and technical infrastructure for peace and conflict resolution. In this way, he explores how public values influence scientific and technological research.
